Planning a holiday can be one of the most exciting activities of the year for a family. Having a break to look forward to and unwinding is something that we all enjoy from time-to-time.

While many holiday destinations are easy to reach without any problems, there are some countries that you should research before travelling to.

The Foreign Office posts updates to the government website every time travel advice changes for a country. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) is the UK government department responsible for foreign policy, development, and consular services.

FCDO provides advice about risks of travel to help you make informed decisions. This includes health, crime, legal and other risks such as political conflict and natural disasters.

The FCDO has issued various travel warnings, including advice against “all travel” and “all but essential travel” to countries or parts of countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America.

The government agency updates pages for 226 countries via Gov.uk, 73 currently have no-go zones due to several reasons including security and health issues.

There are currently eight countries that the Foreign Office has advised against "all travel" to. Reasons includes security situations, significant risk of arrest and ongoing conflict.

Foreign Office advises against all travel to:

  • Afghanistan – “You should not travel to Afghanistan. The security situation is volatile. Travel throughout Afghanistan is extremely dangerous and border crossings may not be open.

  • Belarus – "FCDO advises against all travel to Belarus. You face a significant risk of arrest if you have at any time engaged in any activity now considered illegal by the Belarusian regime."
  • Haiti – "FCDO advises against all travel to Haiti due to the volatile security situation. There are currently no British consular officials in Haiti and our ability to provide consular assistance is severely limited and cannot be delivered in person in Haiti."
  • Iran – "FCDO advises against all travel to Iran. British and British-Iranian dual nationals are at significant risk of arrest, questioning or detention. Having a British passport or connections to the UK can be reason enough for the Iranian authorities to detain you.

  • Russia – FCDO advises against all travel to Russia due to the risks and threats from its continuing invasion of Ukraine, including: security incidents, such as drone attacks, and Russian air defence activity, lack of flights to return to the UK and limited ability for the UK government to provide support
  • South Sudan – "FCDO advises against all travel to South Sudan due to the risk of armed violence and criminality. If you are in South Sudan and judge it safe to do so, you should leave now."
  • Syria – "FCDO advises against all travel to Syria due to the ongoing conflict and unpredictable security conditions. If you are a British national in Syria, leave by any practical means."
