Myer says its new chief merchandise officer Allan Winstanley will make a formidable team with incoming CEO John King, given they worked together in turning around UK department store House of Fraser.

Mr Winstanley was the former executive director of womenswear at the UK retailer, where he worked alongside Mr King from 2006 to 2014.

Myer executive chairman Garry Hounsell says Mr King and Mr Winstanley are a "formidable and proven team" who will be committed to improving Myer's financial performance.

Mr Winstanley has also served as buying director at high-end department store chain De Bijenkorf in the Netherlands, and merchandise manager at UK formal men's wear retailer Moss Bros Group.

He has recently worked at Sears and Kmart in the US.

Mr Winstanley is expected to join Myer on July 2, while Mr King is due to take the reins on June 4.

Myer's former CEO Richard Umbers stepped down in February after failing to arrest the retailer's ongoing sales slide.

The struggling retailer recently reported a 2.7 per cent fall in third-quarter sales and warned that unseasonably warm weather could hit fourth-quarter profits.

Myer is also the target of ongoing criticism from its largest shareholder, retail veteran Solomon Lew, who has called for an overhaul of the Myer board and the appointment of experienced directors with a deep knowledge of retail.

Shares in Myer were flat at 44 cents by 1135 AEST.
